Corporate Team Building that shifts behaviour – not just morale
Real feedback. Real depth.
The conversations your team have been avoiding, worked through.
Into the Deep™ is a team building activity to improve communication skills. It uses the metaphor of an ocean dive to build the skills, confidence and willingness to get "beneath the surface" and have the conversations that matter.
Most teams operate safely at the surface but what lies underneath are the frustrations, perceptions, unexpressed appreciation, and the small resentments that build over time. They don't disappear because they go unspoken. They just get harder to resolve.
Those conversations can feel uncomfortable, like descending to a reef. But teams that have them come back with what lies beneath: an environment people want to work in, results they couldn't achieve before, and trust that has been tested.
The ideal option if you are looking for a team building activity for better communication that goes beyond teaching a model. Your team will learn the equipment, agree the rules that keep the dive safe, and then actually have the conversation - with each other, about each other, on the day.
Delegates arrive expecting a standard workshop on improving communication in the workplace. Instead they meet Salty, their Dive Master for the day - mask, snorkel, flippers and all - and learn that their team is preparing for a high-risk deep-sea expedition.
The destination is Breakthrough Reef, several hundred metres down. On the way the crew passes the wrecks of The Gossip, The Passivity and The Agenda - three ships that sank for reasons every team recognises, and that recognition is the point.
Three hazards make the descent dangerous, and every one will sound familiar to your team.
Before anyone goes deep, the crew learns the three skills that make an honest conversation survivable: self-awareness, giving feedback well, and receiving it without defensiveness. Each is taught and practised in shallow water first - nobody is asked to use them on each other until they're able.

This is where it all comes together.
The crew resurfaces and takes stock - not just of what was said at the reef, but of what the descent revealed about how the team communicates every day:
The workshop itself is not the honest conversation we talk about; but it is the thing that makes courageous conversations in the workplace possible. So the debrief closes on the question that matters most: what's the next dive you need to do, and when are you doing it?
This is the perfect feedback team building activity if you want an experience that improves the self-awareness, skills, and willingness to say what needs saying - and to hear it well.
Participants leave Into the Deep™ having internalised the key capabilities behind honest, courageous conversations:
The learning outcomes map directly to the conversations your team is avoiding right now, making this experience ideal for any team ready to stop working around each other and start working with each other.

Time: One full day. The descent is progressive - depth is earned, not granted - and a full day gives the equipment training and the deep dive at Breakthrough Reef the time your people need. This program can be done in a half-day, following the same 'descent', but with tighter equipment modules and a shorter deep dive.
Group size: Dive crews of up to eight people who work closely together. Because this program is best run with a single intact team, larger teams are divided into their natural work groups.
Format: Indoor space, themed and facilitator-led, with all dive packs, props and materials provided.

"Relaxed and engaging tone." The day began with a brilliant activity which set a relaxed tone right from the start - a fantastic way to bring the group together.
"This one delivered what others didn't." None have had the lasting impact of this one. It was sharp, well-facilitated, and completely aligned with our goals.
"Not just another team building workshop." Our team left more connected, energised, and ready to take on the next big challenge.
"A session that understood government needs." Not just off-the-shelf content - a session that respected our context and gave us tools we could actually use.
"Making uncomfortable, feel comfortable." You're not paying to be comfortable - you're paying to be developed. Growth happens outside your comfort zone.
"A game-changer for our team." They created space for real conversations and practical change, tailored to the realities of working in government.
Most communication training teaches people about feedback and sends them home to try it. Into the Deep trains the skills and then has the team use them on each other. This all happens in the room, that day, with the facilitator present while it happens. Participants leave with three usable models, a team charter they wrote themselves, a participant workbook they have worked through, and a specific commitment to the next conversation they need to have. That is the difference between team building activities for better communication and a workshop about communication.
The programs that really move in the needle when it comes to building better communication skills are ones where the team practises on each other rather than on a case study. Experiential Edge built Into the Deep so that teams are trained in the ‘equipment’, write the rules that keep the conversation safe, and then have the conversation that day.
You make them survivable before you make them happen. In Into the Deep the descent is progressive so the crew starts on deck, tries a few shallow dives, and earns its way down. The skills come before the deep conversation is had, and the team writes its own charter agreeing what would make the dive unsafe. By the time anyone says anything difficult, there is a structure holding it: a three-step model for giving feedback, a one-breath rule that stops people padding the message, and an agreed way to receive it. Difficult conversations at work fail because people are asked to have them without the skills and equipment that help make them happen.
It helps with the kind that hasn’t become a formal problem yet. Into the Deep is designed to surface the ordinary, everyday things that go unsaid in teams – the small frustrations and unspoken perceptions – that can turn into workplace conflict over time. It is not a mediation, and it is not the right tool for a formal grievance, a bullying complaint or an active dispute already in process. If you are unsure about what program is right, get in touch, and we’ll go through whether this program is right for your team.
Yes. The deep dive at Breakthrough Reef works from a Johari Window-based exercise, in which each person selects words to describe their colleagues and then explains why they chose them. The feedback and receiving models are drawn from thirty-five years of experiential learning practice at The Real Learning Experience, the division Experiential Edge sits within.
Nobody is required to say anything unkind. The word list used at Breakthrough Reef deliberately includes descriptors that could be read as challenging as well as complimentary, because a list of purely positive words produces a pleasant hour and no change. But the whole design points the other way: participants are trained in how to give feedback well, the team writes its own Dive Charter before descending, and every observation has to be explained rather than simply handed over. The goal is honest and robust feedback, not bluntness.
This program includes four activities, each targeting a specific skill. A self-reflection exercise builds self-awareness – the gap between what you intend and what people actually experience. A three-step feedback model teaches how to give feedback that lands, practised under a one-breath rule that forces people to be specific. And a receiving exercise covers staying open instead of defensive. Then the team writes its own Dive Charter before the deep dive, where participants describe their colleagues to their faces and explain why. Every skill is taught in shallow water first and used during the program – before anyone leaves.
The earlier the better. Into the Deep is a full-day program with a facilitator working closely with a single team, so availability is more limited than for the large-scale conference activities Experiential Edge runs. If your date is close, get in touch and we will tell you what is possible.
Experiential Edge delivers a full suite of immersive, activity-based team building activities for corporate companies. Every team faces different challenges at work, which is why each of our experiences is designed to deliver a different outcome. Whether you are lifting performance, shifting culture, sharpening communication or bringing people back into alignment, there is an activity built for the result you are chasing.
